Our set German book was Schiller's "Don
Carlos". Herr Sklarz's teaching method was to open at page one,
and then HE would translate the whole play, whilst we made notes.
You might imagine how pleased we were when half way through one lesson, we came
to the end of the play. However, we were made
to open at page one again, and the whole process was repeated!!
I also remember that after his death, we had a number of substitute German teachers, including "Toby" Topham, but the worst by far was Mr Kitto, who appeared to be permanently drunk!!I
I found out about Tottenham Hotspur being formed by ex-pupils during my time at the school, and we reported it to a teacher (don't remember who - maybe Toby) and he arranged for the Secretary of the Spurs to come to school and talk to a few of us.
