I was at TGS from Sept 1938 to July 1939 when I
left for Kettering Grammar. I lived on Henningham Road and went to Devonshire
Hill school before TGS. The photo shows my class with teacher Miss Piper who
rapped your knuckles with a wooden ruler and the head Mr.Parker who caned me.
The cross is above my head. A man with a small cart stood outside the gate
selling 1/4d sweets. My only memories of TGS are being pelted in the fives
courts which I can see in the photo on your site and being chased by a gang on
the way home. I was first tempted by their Moll who offered to let me "feel
her for fourpence". My offer of a penny was rejected. While running, I trod
on a broken bottle and cut my ankle. I still have the scar. I was forbidden to
go near Weir Hall, but I did and fell in.
