Past Pupils

Gordon Mylam (1952)

I was at TGS from 1945 to 1952.  (Actually until early 1953, as my National Service - in the Royal Army Educational Corps - was delayed because I had damaged my leg in my first rugby training session with TGSOBA. I studied at TGS for a Civil Service exam while I was recovering.).

I am in the first photo on the rugby teams' page, which is stated to be the U14 2nd XV.  I am surprised if it was the 2nd XV because that means that, at the beginning of the school year (in September 1947), I was only 14 and I could have been playing against 18 year olds!  I thought that photo was the U15 team (3rd year pupils) - but I am not absolutely sure.  (I thought that an 'Under 14' had to be no older than 13 at the beginning of the school year, on 1st September, but am I wrong?)

I was quite tall for my age and managed to get into the school 1st XV from the 4th form at school to the Upper 6th; from 1948/9 to 1951/2 - 4 years.   So I was playing against 18 year olds when I was 15!  I am in the middle at the back; 5th from the left.  I was a wing forward.

In the army I served in Northern Ireland, Yorkshire, Hamburg and Berlin, until 1955. Then I joined H.M. Customs and Excise, with whom I served for 39 very enjoyable years! I played rugby for TGSOBA until 1963.
