Past Pupils

Peter Welling (1948)

I was at the Tottenham Grammar School from 1943 to 1948. I was there when the V2 fell on the School killing Goodman and Poulton and also injuring Burns (took his arm off).

I was there also when Ken Sullivan, an old buddy of mine, as killed during an army cadet camp.

Since coming back to the UK after spending most of my life overseas I have made contact with several old Grammarians, mainly through a Frank Harding who lives in Potters Bar. We were evacuees together in Devon around 1940-1941. He introduced me to the Old Grammarians Rugby Club and also to some members of an affiliated Masonic Lodge. Have been to a couple of their dinners up in North London, and made some contacts.

Also went to a wine and cheese evening at Bruce Castle Park (that I had not seen for 50 years) and saw a bunch of old records including admission documents, including my year (1943).

I visited the School when it was called the Somerset some time in the 1990's, before it was pulled down. I understand the memorial plaque to Goodman and Poulton has been preserved on a wall of new buildings there, although I have not seen it.

I also found a book titled " Till I was Twenty" by a Derek Brimstone, who was a student at the School about the same time as me. It is an excellent book, full; of facts and reminiscences. It has a picture of Tottenham Royal on the front. I called him and we shared many memories . I believe he has another book coming out.

I am now retired, living in Folkestone after spending 15 years in Australia and 20 years in the U.S.
